teaching the poorest children to read, write and dream
teaching the poorest children to read, write and dream
This is our second humanitarian project in the slums of Kenya.
Yes, It is humanitarian, not only educational, because the school in the slums is more than a school. First of all, it’s food to eat. And only after that — food for thought.
We feed the children in Kibera slum twice a day with hot meals. The school does not close even for holidays so as not to stop the nutrition program. Otherwise most of the children will starve to death.

What it is
Kili Happy School is an elementary free of charge school for the youngest slum residents aged 3+.
Who our schoolchildren are
They are extremely poor and vulnerable children of planet Earth. The principle of selection to school is reverse selection. We take those for whom parents cannot pay or those who have no parents.
How we teach
If you don’t mind the monstrous slum locations, everything here is arranged as in a regular elementary school. There are classes, though cramped and dark. There is a tiny school yard. There is a kitchen with almost no equipment and a school cook. Teachers and security guard. The lessons are held in a playful way, but all the attributes of school life are present: a blackboard, desks, workbooks, pens. And… coloured bottle caps. Children count them in arithmetic lessons.
There is not bad maize porridge for breakfast. For lunch kids have rice, beans, vegetables. Eggs and fish someday. By slum standards, this is an unbelievable menu!
After school
Kili Happy School has a lot of things besides the lessons. Together, the children celebrate their birthdays and public holidays. We order a cake for celebrations, and kids and teachers feed each other with a spoon according to a cute local tradition.
What further
We will take our children to the zoo, to the carousel, to museums! We want to show the children from the slums a parallel universe, because they never leave Kibera. We’ll equip the school with a library and a play corner, they don’t have any toys or books at home. They will eat ice cream and fried chicken — favorite Africa’s children’s food.
We will do everything we can to make childhood of slum children happier.
What then
Having graduated elementary school they will continue their studies at our secondary Tabor Happy School and receive a state-recognized certificate.
Quite a baby, 2.5 years old! She was born on September 3, 2020.
The mother is raising two children alone. The eldest is five years old. He does not go to school — the mother is sorely lacking money to pay for his studies. The woman is torn between children and small errands to earn a few shillings. She cannot find a hard and low-paid, but stable job, because has no one to leave her children with. "I knew about Tabor School and prayed that it would expand or a similar free school would open and at least one of my children would be able to get food and study there. And God heard my prayers! It turns out that the youngest daughter goes to school first, because the new Kili School will be primary. Let it be. For me, this is a real miracle. I can’t put into words how happy I am for my Davinnah! Thanks to everyone who does such amazing things for Kibera children!"
